Chivers enjoyed an illustrious career spanning over two decades. Born in Southampton in April 1945, he started his professional journey with his hometown club. He made his debut at just 17 years old and went on to score 106 goals in 190 appearances for the Saints.

In January 1968, Chivers was signed by Tottenham Hotspur for £125,000 by manager Bill Nicholson. During his eight years at Spurs, he became a prolific striker, netting 174 goals in 367 matches.
