Moscow Claims U.S. Escalates Atlantic Tensions After Oil Tanker Seizure

Russia has accused the United States of escalating military and political tensions following the interception of a Moscow-linked oil tanker in the North Atlantic. This seizure is part of the U.S. blockade on Venezuelan oil exports.
Accusations and Reactions
On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the U.S. actions as “dangerous and irresponsible.” They expressed concern over Washington’s willingness to create international crises, describing the situation as alarming.
The ministry noted that this incident could further harm the already strained Russian-American relations, which have deteriorated due to various disputes in recent years.
The Tanker Incident
The vessel in question has been identified differently by both nations. Russia refers to it as the “Marinera,” claiming it received provisional navigation approval under the Russian flag on December 24. In contrast, the U.S. names it “Bella 1,” alleging it operated under a false flag and is part of the Venezuelan fleet targeted by American sanctions.
Legal Disputes
- Russia’s Position: The Russian Foreign Ministry denied claims that the vessel was navigating under a false flag, asserting that Russia has consistently provided reliable information regarding the ship’s ownership and status.
- International Law: Russia emphasizes that international law grants exclusive jurisdiction over high-seas vessels to their flag state.
- Legal Grounds for Interception: According to Russian officials, the stopping and inspecting of ships at sea are permitted only under specific conditions such as piracy or human trafficking, which do not apply in this case.
Operation Details
On Wednesday, American coast guard units, supported by British forces, intercepted and seized the empty tanker. This operation took place between Iceland and Scotland after the vessel had been pursued since December 21.
The developments highlight escalating tensions in the Atlantic region and emphasize the broader geopolitical issues concerning oil transportation and sanctions enforcement. With both nations asserting their positions, the situation remains fraught with potential for further conflict.
