Swiss Bar Faces Tragedy After 5-Year Safety Inspection Lapse

The deadly fire at the Le Constellation bar in Switzerland, which occurred on New Year’s Eve, has raised serious concerns regarding safety inspections. Local authorities revealed that the bar had not undergone any fire safety inspection for five years prior to the incident.
Details of the Tragic Incident
On December 31, 2022, a catastrophic fire engulfed the Le Constellation bar, resulting in the loss of 40 lives. Nicolas Féraud, president of the Crans-Montana council, disclosed this alarming information during a press conference. He expressed deep regret over the oversight in safety inspections.
Inspection Lapses and Responsibilities
According to the mayor, local council officials are mandated to perform annual inspections of establishments like bars. These reviews are intended to assess potential fire hazards, particularly in areas such as kitchens.
- Last inspection: 2019
- Victims: 40 fatalities
- Fire safety exits: Two for a maximum of 200 patrons
However, the inspections do not evaluate noise-cancellation materials. The soft foam insulation, now believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, did not raise any concerns during prior reviews.
Legal and Criminal Investigations
The local council’s role in the tragedy is still under scrutiny. Investigators are exploring whether the council will face consequences as part of the criminal inquiry initiated by Swiss prosecutors. Féraud indicated that it will ultimately be a decision for the judges.
Furthermore, negligence is being investigated against the bar’s management for charges including manslaughter and arson. Authorities have taken steps to shut down another venue owned by the same management team.
Fire Safety Concerns Raised
Two exits were available for customers, one in the main area and another in the basement. Nevertheless, reports from survivors suggest that the basement exit might have been locked on the night of the fire. Investigators are looking into this claim as part of their inquiry.
Witness testimonies and video footage showing the fire’s progression have led to criticism of the management. The council president condemned what he described as a “culture of reckless risk” among those in charge.
New Safety Regulations
Following the incident, a new ban on the use of pyrotechnics in enclosed spaces has been implemented. The fire is suspected to have started with sparklers used in champagne bottles, further emphasizing the need for stringent safety measures moving forward.
Féraud concluded the press conference by reflecting on the tragic event and the profound sadness it has caused for the victims’ families. The council has vowed to take full responsibility for its oversight.
