Frozen Ice Triggers Power Failure, Cancelling All Glasgow Subway Services

Services on the Glasgow Subway were completely disrupted on Tuesday morning due to a significant power failure. This failure was attributed to frozen ice on the third rail, preventing operations on both the inner and outer circles.

Power Failure Affects Subway Services

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) reported that it could not operate trains as all stations were closed. This power outage led to widespread cancellations of subway services throughout the city.

Alternative Travel Arrangements

In light of the disruption, SPT announced reciprocal travel arrangements with ScotRail. Subway Smartcard holders can travel between Partick and the City Centre while services remain suspended.

Weather Warnings in Effect

  • Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice were issued in Glasgow.
  • The warnings came into effect on Tuesday, coinciding with the subway service failure.

This combination of adverse weather and infrastructure issues contributed to the significant disruption of transportation services in Glasgow. Commuters are advised to check for updates on travel options as conditions evolve.
