Industry Group Warns: Electric Car Discounts Unsustainable

The automotive industry is undergoing rapid transformation with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). However, warnings are emerging from the industry regarding the sustainability of current electric car discounts.
Electric Vehicle Sales Surge
According to the latest data, electric vehicle sales in the UK have significantly increased. Almost one in four cars sold in 2025 is an EV. This growth is attributed to favorable policies and incentives aimed at promoting electric vehicles.
Industry Perspectives
Colin Walker from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit has praised these recent figures. He noted that increased EV adoption could invigorate the second-hand market, mitigating cost concerns for consumers.
In contrast, Ginny Buckley, CEO of Electrifying.com, highlighted the need for consumer confidence. She emphasized that moving from one in four new vehicles to one in three will require more than just positive sales momentum. Buyers seek clarity in messaging and stable policies.
Government Support Measures
The UK government has introduced several measures to facilitate the growth of the electric vehicle market:
- The £2 billion Electric Car Grant Scheme offers up to £3,750 off the purchase price of an electric vehicle.
- Funding is being allocated for the expansion of charging infrastructure.
Despite these initiatives, the government recently proposed a “per mile” tax on electric vehicles. This tax is intended to compensate for falling fuel duty revenues as more drivers switch to electric cars.
Projected Sales Impact
According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, the current incentives may lead to an additional 320,000 EV sales over five years. Nevertheless, the new tax could potentially reduce sales by around 440,000, resulting in a net loss of approximately 120,000 sales.
Industry stakeholders, including transport minister Keir Mather, stress the importance of coherent communication from the government. Mather noted that EV sales have risen nearly 24% this year, with almost 500,000 new EVs now on UK roads since 2024.
Challenges Ahead
The transition to electric vehicles is hindered by conflicting signals sent to consumers. Industry experts assert that consistent support and clear messaging are crucial for sustaining EV sales growth.
As the market evolves, stakeholders will need to address these challenges to ensure that the excitement surrounding electric vehicles translates into enduring consumer confidence and adoption.
