ABI Advises Homeowners and Drivers for Approaching Cold Weather

As cold weather approaches the UK, with snow warnings issued for Scotland, homeowners and drivers are urged to prepare adequately. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has released crucial safety advice aimed at safeguarding properties and ensuring safe travel conditions in low temperatures.
Advice for Homeowners
Mark Shepherd, Assistant Director at ABI, emphasizes the importance of preventative measures. He advises homeowners to follow weather alerts and take steps to protect their properties from cold damage.
Preventing Frozen Pipes
Frozen pipes can lead to severe damage. In 2024, insurers processed approximately 8,000 claims related to pipe damage due to cold weather, totaling around £250 million. The average claim reached nearly £33,000.
- Insulate water pipes and tanks, particularly those in unheated areas.
- Utilize draught excluders around doors to maintain indoor warmth.
- Set your thermostat to an anti-frost setting.
- Know the location and functionality of your stopcock, usually found under the kitchen sink.
- Consider shutting off water when leaving your home unoccupied or using a timer for heating.
If pipes freeze, turn off the water mains immediately and avoid using tools to dislodge ice. If a pipe bursts, act quickly to turn off the water and consult with your insurer.
Driving Safely in Cold Weather
With colder temperatures, driving conditions can become dangerous. ABI advises drivers to stay vigilant and prepared.
- Never leave a vehicle unattended while it’s defrosting to prevent theft.
- Ensure your windscreen and lights are fully cleared of snow before starting your journey.
- Avoid driving through flooded areas; they may pose hidden dangers.
- Keep your vehicle well-maintained, including checking windscreen wipers and tires.
- Charge your mobile phone and carry emergency supplies, like blankets and food.
Stay updated with weather reports and local advice. Your insurance remains valid during severe weather alerts, but caution is advised.
Travel Considerations
Winter weather can disrupt travel plans. If flying, check with your airline for updates. In cases of cancellations or delays, review your travel insurance policy for potential claims. Sign up for flood alerts, especially following a thaw after snowfall.
Keeping Warm Safely
While open fires and candles may lower heating costs, they increase the risk of fire damage. If using fireplaces, ensure they are inspected and cleaned, and always utilize a fireguard.
The ABI’s recommendations aim to equip homeowners and drivers with the knowledge needed to navigate the challenges of winter weather effectively and safely. Following these guidelines can minimize risk and enhance safety during this cold season.
