Sea Rescue Mission Underway for Struggling Individuals

A significant sea rescue mission is currently underway off the East Yorkshire coast due to reports of individuals in distress. The incident was first reported at approximately 3:10 PM on Friday, January 2nd, near Withernsea.

Rescue Operations Mobilized

In response to the situation, HM Coastguard deployed multiple resources. These include:

  • An HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter
  • A fixed-wing aircraft
  • Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea, and Hull
  • The RNLI’s inshore lifeboat from Withernsea
  • An all-weather lifeboat from Bridlington
  • Humber Rescue’s inshore lifeboat

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service and an air ambulance are also on the scene, along with Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue services.

Challenging Conditions Reported

As the operation progressed, the RNLI in Withernsea confirmed that the situation remained “ongoing” by 5 PM and declined to provide further comments.

Moreover, Hornsea Inshore Rescue shared concerns about treacherous conditions. They noted that high waves made it impossible to launch the lifeboat safely. The organization stated:

  • “Horrendous conditions and three-meter waves are breaking on our slipway.”
  • “Our 4×4 vehicle is en route to Withernsea with a casualty care crew.”

Weather Impact

This rescue mission comes amid freezing temperatures in Withernsea, a coastal town situated approximately 18 miles east of Hull. In light of the severe weather, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council has activated its emergency protocol.

The community awaits further updates as authorities continue their operations. El-Balad will provide additional information as it becomes available.
