Ben Roberts Shapes Red Raider Dynasty

In 2021, Ben Roberts emerged as a notable football prospect hailing from Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. His journey began when Washington State’s coaching staff, attending a mega camp in Dallas, expressed interest in him. However, due to an NCAA rule prohibiting the recruitment of players coached in the past two years, Roberts was off-limits to Washington State.

Roberts, a safety at the time, was recognized for his potential as a future linebacker. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 190 pounds, he caught the attention of Texas Tech. On September 13, 2021, coach Matt Wells offered him a full scholarship, which Roberts accepted on the same day. Despite Wells being replaced by Joey McGuire shortly afterward, Roberts remained committed to Texas Tech and transitioned to linebacker upon arriving in Lubbock.

Breakout Performance and Rising Star

In 2023, Roberts made headlines by marking his first career start during a Week 2 game against Oregon. While the Red Raiders lost that match, Roberts showcased his talent with 12 tackles, signaling his potential on the field. Acknowledging his initial struggles, he reflected on how he relied on his instincts gained from playing safety.

Impressive Statistics

Throughout the 2023 season, Roberts established himself as a key player. He recorded 107 tackles, the most by a freshman at Texas Tech since 1980. Additionally, he achieved double-digit tackles in four of his first five starts in conference play. His stellar performance earned him the title of Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, making him the first Red Raider to receive this award.

Roberts’ impressive performance peaked in the Big 12 Championship game, where he earned the Most Outstanding Player distinction. He recorded two interceptions and five tackles, demonstrating his pivotal role in Texas Tech’s defense. His determination to contribute to the team’s success was evident, as he explained his tactical choice to bat down one pass instead of attempting a third interception.

The Texas Tech Transformation

Roberts’ journey with the Red Raiders reflects the larger transformation of the Texas Tech football program. Once limited to subpar facilities, the team now benefits from one of the nation’s top football infrastructures. Roberts recognized the shift, stating that players now enjoy a better life both on and off the field compared to previous years.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Roberts envisions a bright future for Texas Tech football. He believes the team has the potential to evolve into a dynasty under Coach McGuire’s leadership. As they prepare for further challenges, including the upcoming Orange Bowl, Roberts remains committed to building upon the progress they’ve made.

“I think we’re the start of a dynasty,” he stated, expressing confidence in the team’s trajectory. His commitment emphasizes not just individual achievement but also the collective success of the Red Raiders, making their mark in college football history.
