In an innovative automotive project, Detroit resident Zach Sutton has created a unique minivan that seamlessly combines two front ends. Named “Bak2Bak,” this extraordinary vehicle merges a 1993 Dodge Caravan with a 1991 Plymouth Voyager. The engineering feat means the vehicle can drive in both directions, providing an amusing spectacle on the streets.
Cross-Border Journey with a Twist
This one-of-a-kind minivan was built with an interesting twist: the front half originated from Canada while the rear came from the United States. Sutton successfully crossed the border into Canada to showcase his creation, marking a notable moment for automotive diplomacy.
Sutton explained that his project represents cooperation between the two neighboring countries. “It’s a model for what we could want to be,” Sutton remarked, emphasizing the goodwill between Canada and the U.S. after taking his unusual vehicle to Windsor.
Creating the Bak2Bak Minivan
The construction of Bak2Bak took place at the i3detroit community workshop in Ferndale, Michigan, where Sutton is also a member of the Detroit Freakbike Experience. Over three days, he meticulously crafted the vehicle, using advanced tools such as a laser to cut the vans, ensuring a precise fit.

Sutton collaborated with fellow builders, including Bob Katovich, who assisted with the dismantling process. After separating the two vehicles, they faced the challenge of combining them into a functional unit. The headlights of the rear vehicle were ingeniously repurposed as taillights, and the fuel tank was cleverly relocated.

Although Bak2Bak has limited seating, accommodating only two seatbelts, Sutton notes it offers a fun experience for passengers. The vehicle garnered attention and reactions ranging from confusion to amusement when spotted on the road. It quickly gained popularity on social media, captivating millions after being shared online.
