North Bay New Year’s Closures as Families First, Fireworks Return Tonight

As North Bay gears up to welcome the New Year, several services and businesses will pause operations for New Year’s Day. On January 1, many establishments, including government offices and retail outlets, will close their doors.
New Year’s Day Closures in North Bay
- Government Offices: North Bay City Hall will be closed.
- Retail Outlets: Key shopping locations, such as Northgate Shopping Centre, will not operate.
- Grocery Stores: Chains like Independent, No Frills, Food Basics, and Walmart will shut down.
- Public Transit: North Bay Transit buses will not run on New Year’s Day.
- Waste Services: Both the City’s waste diversion facility and Merrick Landfill will be closed, and garbage or recycling will not be collected.
Waste collection will be delayed by one day throughout the week. Residents are encouraged to dispose of their Christmas trees at the Public Works Yard, located at 1399 Franklin Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until January 10. All ornaments, tinsel, and lights must be removed prior to drop-off, and trees will not be picked up with regular garbage.
Holiday Hours for Alcohol Retailers
Alcohol retailers will also observe modified hours during the holiday. The Beer Store locations will close at 6 p.m. on December 31 and will remain closed on New Year’s Day. Families First New Year’s Eve Celebration
Despite many closures, North Bay invites families to participate in a festive gathering this New Year’s Eve. The 31st Families First event will take place tonight at Memorial Gardens and Thomson Park.
- Date and Time: The celebration begins at 5 p.m.
- Activities: The event will feature skating with the Battalion, button-making, face painting, magic shows, interactive reptile shows, and a centennial photo booth.
- Centennial Time Capsule: A significant moment will occur as the Centennial Time Capsule is sealed. Items can be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. before it is locked for 25 years.
- Fireworks: The evening concludes with fireworks at 9 p.m.
