Rugby Icon Jonathan Davies Awarded CBE in Wales New Year Honours

Welsh rugby legend Jonathan “Jiffy” Davies has been honored with the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year Honours 2023. At 63 years old, he expressed immense pride in receiving this distinction, which recognizes his significant contributions to cancer services and broadcasting.

Career Highlights and Contributions

Davies, who originally hails from Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire, has had a dynamic career spanning over 28 years in broadcasting. He has been a prominent figure within both rugby league and rugby union. Notably, he played as an outside half for the Welsh national team, earning 37 caps in rugby union and making nine appearances in rugby league during the 1980s and 1990s.

He was part of the esteemed team that secured the Triple Crown during the 1988 Five Nations Championship. In past honors, Davies received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1995 and was promoted to Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015, recognizing his charitable work in cancer support.

Dedication to Cancer Services

Davies has been deeply involved with the Velindre Cancer Centre, where he serves as president. He highlighted that this recent CBE award is not solely personal but belongs to everyone connected with Velindre, especially its dedicated staff. He reflected on the collaborative efforts that have raised over £50 million through various fundraising events, emphasizing his commitment to the cause.

Alongside Davies, more than 70 others from Wales received recognition in the New Year Honours. This includes:

  • Gabby Logan: Awarded an OBE for her services to sports broadcasting and charity. A former international gymnast, Logan was thrilled to receive her honor.
  • Megan Jones: A rugby World Cup winner, also on the honors list.
  • Jeff Edwards: Received an OBE for his charitable work and community service in Aberfan, marking his journey as a survivor of a tragic disaster.
  • Sue Flood: A wildlife photographer recognized with an OBE for her contributions to nature conservation and storytelling through her work.
  • Marcus Fair: Honored with an MBE for his efforts in addiction recovery and tackling homelessness through his media company.

The recognition of these individuals showcases the diverse contributions being made across various fields, reflecting the impact of their work in their communities and beyond. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens commended all recipients for their commitment to improving lives and supporting vulnerable populations.
