Cowboys Cut Veteran Cornerback Diggs, Sources Confirm

The Dallas Cowboys have officially released cornerback Trevon Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowler, as confirmed by various sources. The decision comes just before the team’s final game of the season against the New York Giants.

Cowboys Part Ways with Trevon Diggs

At 27 years old, Trevon Diggs will go through waivers. If unclaimed, he will enter free agency. This release concludes a difficult period marked by injuries and performance issues that strained his relationship with the Cowboys organization.

Injury Struggles

  • Diggs signed a five-year contract extension worth $97 million in 2023.
  • Over the last two seasons, he played only 21 games due to injuries.
  • Diggs suffered a left ACL tear during practice in 2023, missing six games.
  • This season, he missed eight games related to a right knee issue.
  • Additionally, he suffered a concussion from a home accident while attempting to install a TV mount.

Performance and Recovery Issues

The Cowboys had concerns regarding Diggs’ recovery routines. He opted to rehabilitate in South Florida rather than under team supervision. This led the team to enforce a $500,000 salary de-escalator for 2025 after he failed to meet participation requirements for the offseason program.

Despite finishing the season on injured reserve, Diggs managed to play in eight games. He recorded 27 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pressures but didn’t manage a pass breakup or interception this year. This was a stark decline from his earlier seasons, where he recorded at least one interception each year, including 11 in 2021, his standout year.

Future Implications

With Diggs’ release, the Cowboys could save roughly $12 million in salary cap space. Recently, the team also placed former Pro Bowl cornerback DaRon Bland on injured reserve due to a foot injury. Currently, the Cowboys have several cornerbacks on the roster, including rookies Shavon Revel and Trikweze Bridges, alongside other players like Caelen Carson, Reddy Steward, and Corey Ballentine.

As speculation builds regarding his future, Trevon Diggs is now a free agent, with teams potentially interested in his talent if claimed off waivers.
