Oilers Release Player During Christmas Season

The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant roster change during the Christmas season by releasing forward David Tomasek. After a few months in the NHL, Tomasek will return to Sweden to play for Farjestad BK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Details of the Release
According to reports from the Swedish newspaper Varmlands Folkblad, the official announcement of Tomasek’s release will be made once the NHL roster freeze is lifted on Sunday. Tomasek had previously played for Farjestad during the last two seasons, showcasing his skills as the top scorer in the SHL for the 2024-2025 season, netting 57 points in 47 games.
Performance with the Oilers
- Joined the Oilers in April with a one-year contract worth $1.2 million.
- Appeared in 22 games, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
- He was a healthy scratch for 16 games this season.
- His last game with Edmonton was on December 13.
In an interview before his departure, Tomasek expressed his desire to adapt and fulfill the expectations of his coaches, despite the challenges he faced. “I try to control what I can,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation while remaining hopeful about his future in hockey.
Future Prospects
Tomasek, a Czech native, highlighted his confidence in finding opportunities in Europe. He noted, “I will probably always be able to find a job in Europe.” Having played junior hockey in Canada with the Belleville Bulls, Tomasek had brief stints in various leagues across Europe, including the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, and Sweden.
By returning to the SHL, Tomasek aims to revitalize his career after a short spell with the Oilers, pursuing his passion for hockey while keeping his options open for the future.
