UK’s Largest Hooters Closes After Difficult Year and Withheld Tips

The largest Hooters location in the UK, situated in Liverpool, is set to close permanently following a challenging year. The restaurant, which opened in 2022, faced a series of controversies that led to its downfall, culminating in an announcement made by its director, Barry Morris.

Closure of UK’s Largest Hooters

Barry Morris disclosed that the Hooters venue on Water Street would cease operations after January 11, 2026. He expressed a desire to develop a concept that better resonates with the local community of Liverpool. Morris stated, “I believe now is the right time to move away from the Hooters brand and create a more inclusive concept that locals can be proud of.”

Financial Difficulties and Withheld Tips

This closure follows a tumultuous year for the brand, especially after Hooters of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March. Reports revealed that staff had not received tips since August, as those funds were retained to assist the struggling business.

  • Owner Barry Morris aims to create a new sports bar and restaurant.
  • The current Hooters location will be transitioned into a new establishment in 2026.
  • Employees have faced financial hardships, leading to withheld service charge payments.

Controversy Surrounding the Hooters Brand

The Liverpool Hooters faced opposition from local authorities, including former Mayor Joanne Anderson, who criticized the venue for its perceived objectifying nature. Furthermore, a lengthy dispute over the large neon signage, which was removed in June 2025, added to the venue’s challenges.

Additionally, former manager Rachael Tansey found herself in a legal issue earlier this year after being stopped by police for erratic driving. This incident attracted significant media attention and further clouded the restaurant’s reputation.

Future Plans for Water Street

With the Hooters brand departing Liverpool, Morris aims to re-establish the venue with a focus on inclusivity and community sentiment. He plans to share more details soon about this new chapter for the site, reflecting Liverpool’s vibrant culture and love for sports.

This transition marks the end of an era for the Hooters brand in Liverpool, which once held the title of the largest location worldwide.
