ProPublica Faces Resistance While Seeking Comments on Reports

This summer, reporters at ProPublica faced significant challenges while investigating the Department of Education’s efforts to undermine public education amid the Trump administration’s actions to reduce the agency. The team emphasizes the importance of allowing subjects of their stories to provide comments and context, highlighting the resistance they encountered during this process.

Challenges in Communication

Megan O’Matz, a reporter from ProPublica’s Midwest team, began reaching out to the Department of Education in mid-August for an interview. This included contacting key officials such as Lindsey Burke and Meg Kilgannon. However, responses from the department were limited and unhelpful.

Attempts to Engage Officials

  • Initial Contact: O’Matz initially requested comments from the department’s press office and high-ranking officials in August.
  • Follow-ups: Despite multiple follow-ups on August 18 and 28, no substantial replies were received.
  • Escalation: On September 8, O’Matz reached out again to the chief of staff but was still met with silence.

On September 17, spokesperson Madison Biedermann expressed concern over ProPublica’s outreach methods, labeling them inappropriate and unprofessional. However, ProPublica maintained that it is standard practice to reach out to relevant individuals for comments to ensure fairness.

Shift in Public Perception of Journalism

Over the decades, the perception and reception of journalists have drastically changed. Once celebrated as defenders of truth, today’s reporters often face hostility and accusations, particularly in the current political climate.

Examples of Resistance

  • Doug Bock Clark: Investigated North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby, who resisted direct engagement.
  • Vernal Coleman: Reported on the Veterans Affairs Department, encountering backlash after visiting a source’s home.

These reporters embody the principles of responsible journalism, seeking to inform the public despite facing unwarranted accusations.

Looking Ahead

As ProPublica moves towards 2026, its commitment to public interest journalism remains steadfast. The team will continue to provide subjects of its stories with opportunities for feedback, ensuring that accountability and accuracy are prioritized.

In a climate where transparency should prevail, El-Balad highlights the importance of journalists’ roles in fostering informed discussions while navigating the increasing challenges of communication and public perception.
