Penn State to Appoint USC’s D’Anton Lynn as Defensive Coordinator

Penn State is set to appoint D’Anton Lynn as its new defensive coordinator, as confirmed by a trusted source. This decision marks a significant move for the Nittany Lions, signaling a new chapter in their defensive strategy.

D’Anton Lynn’s Coaching Journey

D’Anton Lynn, a former player for Penn State from 2008 to 2011, has an impressive background in both playing and coaching. After his collegiate career as a defensive back, he ventured into professional football before transitioning to coaching.

His coaching career began in earnest in 2014 when he took an internship with the New York Jets. Lynn has steadily risen through the ranks. In 2023, he served as the defensive coordinator at UCLA and, in 2024, he took on the same role at USC.

Impact on Penn State’s Coaching Staff

Lynn’s appointment comes under the leadership of new head coach Matt Campbell. He will be the first defensive coordinator under Campbell, who has been actively assembling his coaching staff.

  • Terry Smith, a former player at Penn State, is the associate head coach.
  • Dan Connor, another alum, may join as linebackers coach.

Campbell is looking to fill key coaching positions, particularly:

  • Linebackers Coach (potentially Dan Connor)
  • Defensive Line Coach
  • Running Backs Coach

Previous Connections and Expectations

Interestingly, Lynn was a target for former head coach James Franklin last season. Franklin ultimately chose Jim Knowles as the defensive coordinator. Knowles has since moved on to Tennessee after a mixed season at Penn State.

D’Anton Lynn comes from a coaching family, as he is the son of Anthony Lynn, the current assistant coach for the Washington Commanders and former head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2020.

With Penn State’s defense set to take a new direction, supporters are eager to see the impact D’Anton Lynn will have on the Nittany Lions. His appointment reflects the program’s commitment to building a strong coaching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.
