Delhi-NCR, UP Schools Closed Today as IMD Issues Red Alert for Fog

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Delhi-NCR region due to extremely dense fog forecasted for today. This warning comes amid ongoing cold spells that are affecting visibility in the area.
School Closures in Delhi-NCR and UP
On Monday, December 29, 2023, schools in the Delhi-NCR region and parts of Uttar Pradesh will remain closed. This decision was made in response to severe cold weather conditions.
Uttar Pradesh Governing Announcement
- The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, announced that all schools up to Class 12 will be closed until January 1, 2024.
- This directive affects ICSE, CBSE, and UP Board schools across the state.
Noida’s Precautionary Measures
- Noida’s district administration has declared a holiday for all schools from December 29 to January 1 due to the cold wave.
- Many schools in Noida, Delhi, and Gurgaon had already closed for winter break prior to these announcements.
Weather Conditions and Forecast
Delhi experienced dense fog early today, which is expected to persist. The IMD predicted “cold day conditions” in isolated areas of west Uttar Pradesh as well.
- A red alert is specifically in place for Delhi.
- Other areas in North India, including Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, are under an orange alert.
The IMD also mentioned that very dense fog will likely continue during evening and morning hours in several northern states, including Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, until December 31.
Temperature & Air Quality Update
The expected temperature range in Delhi today is between 21°C to 23°C for maximum temperatures, and 7°C to 9°C for minimum temperatures. The current weather conditions are characterized by normal minimum temperatures and slightly above-normal maximum temperatures.
In terms of air quality, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 403 at 8 am today, categorizing it as ‘very poor’. The situation has been similar throughout the past week, with various areas experiencing severe pollution levels.
- On Sunday, the AQI was 390, indicating very poor quality.
- 19 monitoring stations noted a severe air quality status, with Anand Vihar at 457 being the highest recorded level.
Residents are advised to remain cautious and stay updated on local weather conditions and school status. Parents should verify individual school schedules as many institutions are on holiday.
