Guy Fieri Commits to Reviving Struggling County Fair

Celebrity chef Guy Fieri is committed to revitalizing the Humboldt County Fair amid significant challenges. His efforts to support the fair come as horse racing, a staple attraction, has been discontinued this year.
Fieri’s Connection to the Fair
Fieri, originally from Ferndale, expressed deep concern over the fair’s situation. In a conversation with the Times-Standard, he emphasized the importance of community engagement. “It’s about community and bringing everybody together,” he shared.
His involvement intensified in May when he reached out to the California Horse Racing Board. He warned that losing horse racing could severely impact the fair and local community. However, the board ultimately denied the fair’s request to allocate racing dates.
The Impact of Declining Revenues
The Humboldt County Fair suffered considerable financial setbacks in 2025. According to CEO Moira Kenny, the fair experienced a 25% decrease in admissions. This decline resulted in a staggering total income drop of $1.4 million compared to the previous year.
- $1 million revenue loss attributed to the absence of horse racing.
- $187,000 decline in concessions.
- $170,000 decrease in sponsorships.
- 65% drop in bar revenue.
New Features and Community Spirit
Despite these losses, the Humboldt County Fair introduced new attractions, such as Kinetic racing, to draw in attendees. Fieri encouraged the community to rally around the fair, regardless of the horse racing situation. “You got to remember, this is your fair. We got to support it,” he urged.
He reflected on the fair’s long-standing significance in his life, stating, “The Humboldt County Fair was— and still is—a major highlight of my year.” His commitment to preserving the tradition shines through as he hopes to see horse racing return in the future.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Fieri remains optimistic about the fair’s future. He believes that adapting to change is crucial for maintaining the fair’s relevance. “Maybe we have to go with the flow a bit and change with the times,” he noted.
As the fair continues to navigate its new reality, Guy Fieri’s steadfast support exemplifies his dedication to Humboldt County and community traditions.
