Song Criticizes Nigeria’s POTY Winners as Not World-Class

Rigobert Song, the former captain of the Cameroon national football team, has ignited controversy with his recent remarks regarding Nigerian players Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. Despite both players winning the prestigious African Player of the Year award, Song does not regard them as world-class.

Debate Over World-Class Status

The comments were made during an interview shared on social media by ESPN. In the interview, Song was asked to confirm whether he considers a list of Africa Cup of Nations players as world-class. He responded negatively when it came to Osimhen and Lookman.

Player Evaluations

  • Song recognized 15 players from an 18-man list as world-class.
  • Notable players he included were:
    • Mohamed Salah
    • Riyad Mahrez
    • Achraf Hakimi
    • Wilfried Zaha
    • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
    • Brahim Diaz
  • Osimhen and Lookman were notably absent from this elite classification.

Achievements of Osimhen and Lookman

Victor Osimhen, awarded African footballer of the year in 2023, significantly contributed to Napoli’s success. He led them to their first Serie A title in over three decades, finishing as the league’s top scorer. He also played a vital role in guiding Napoli to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ademola Lookman, who received the same accolade in 2024, had a standout season with Atalanta. His efforts were crucial in their Europa League victory, especially highlighted by a historic hat-trick in the final, solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s leading attackers.

Rigobert Song’s Legacy

Currently the head coach of the Central African Republic national team, Song remains a significant figure in African football. His illustrious playing career includes participation in eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, where he captained Cameroon during five editions. He led the team to championship victories in 2000 and 2002, and holds the record for the most consecutive matches played at the tournament with 35 appearances.

After his playing career, Song represented clubs like Liverpool, West Ham United, and 1 FC Köln, before making a return to France with Lens.
