Mild Weather Marks Last Holiday; Snow and Rain in Midwest

As the holiday season progresses, mild weather has taken center stage across Seoul, offering a respite from the cold. However, in the Gangwon region, particularly in the eastern part, heavy snowfall is anticipated overnight.
Mild Weather Observations in Seoul
Temperature in Seoul is currently around 5 degrees Celsius. This warmth is noticeably higher than typical for this time of year. Residents have been enjoying outdoor activities, including ice skating at the Seoul Plaza, although some are taking breaks to warm up.
Weather Forecast for Central Regions
The central regions of South Korea can expect both rain and snow in the coming hours. Light snow and drizzle are moving from the east, with some regions like Chungbuk already experiencing sleet. The forecast suggests that by late afternoon, more areas will see precipitation.
- Light rain and snow predicted across central areas.
- Up to 5mm of light rain expected in parts of Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk.
- Snow accumulation might reach 3cm in northeastern Gyeonggi Province.
- Higher elevations in Gangwon could see up to 8cm of snow.
Special Weather Advisory
Due to the expected snowfall in the Gangwon Yeongseo area, a heavy snow advisory may be issued. Residents should prepare for potentially challenging conditions overnight.
Upcoming Temperatures
Tomorrow’s temperatures are forecasted to be even milder, ranging from 3 degrees Celsius in Seoul to near 0 degrees in Daegu. Afternoon highs are expected to reach 7 degrees in Seoul and 14 degrees in Busan.
Looking Ahead
From the day after tomorrow, clearer skies are expected across much of the nation. This will pave the way for celebrating New Year’s Eve and welcoming the new year with clear views of the sunrise.
Nevertheless, a cold wave approaching from the northwest means that warmer clothing is advisable for those planning to watch New Year’s events outdoors. Additionally, a dry warning is currently in effect along the east coast, particularly in the Gangwon mountain areas, where winds may reach speeds of 15 meters per second. This heightens the risk of wildfires in these regions.
