Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held significant discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax on Saturday. This meeting occurred as Zelenskyy prepared for crucial talks with former President Donald Trump in Florida. The discussions aimed to seek an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelenskyy and Carney’s Meeting Highlights
Prime Minister Carney emphasized the potential for achieving a durable peace under President Zelenskyy’s leadership. He informed the media that Canada would provide an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid to Ukraine. This funding is particularly aimed at strengthening the Ukrainian economy.
- Approximately $1.6 billion is designated as loan guarantees to support the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
- The remaining funds are intended to enhance International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending capacity for Ukraine.
- Canada has pledged to participate in a debt service suspension for Ukraine.
This meeting followed a prior phone conversation between Zelenskyy and Carney, which took place on Friday. During the Halifax meeting, Zelenskyy updated Carney on Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts, particularly concerning the U.S.
Upcoming Discussions in Florida
Zelenskyy will meet Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss a proposed 20-point peace plan. This plan is part of an ongoing effort to resolve the Russian invasion that began on February 24, 2022.
Zelenskyy expressed optimism, stating that Ukraine and the U.S. have achieved consensus on several key issues aimed at concluding the war. However, challenges remain, especially regarding territorial control in Eastern Ukraine and the oversight of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Key Issues on the Agenda
During the upcoming discussions, Zelenskyy plans to address security guarantees and economic agreements for Ukraine. He highlighted the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to ensure progress in negotiations.
He stated: “Our goal is to bring everything to 100 percent.” The discussions are critical, especially considering that Russian forces currently control a significant amount of the Donbas region.
Willingness for Compromise
In previous statements, Zelenskyy indicated his openness to establishing a demilitarized zone in the Donetsk region. This area might be transformed into a free economic zone monitored by international forces if Russia complies with certain conditions.
Despite these initiatives, Zelenskyy acknowledged that territorial issues remain a major hurdle in peace negotiations, with the current agreement being “90 percent ready.”
