Storm Unleashes Extreme Danger on Costa del Sol: Floods and Hail Hit Brit Hotspot

A red warning for “extreme danger” has been issued for the Costa del Sol. This popular holiday destination is experiencing severe weather conditions due to an ongoing storm. Torrential rainfall has led to significant flooding and a series of weather alerts across the region.

Severe Weather Alerts in Costa del Sol

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency escalated the alert level to red for heavy rain in the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce regions. Authorities reported that floodwaters in some areas reached several meters in height.

Flooding and Extreme Conditions

In Málaga, local residents are urged to seek higher ground as streets transform into rivers. Eyewitness accounts and video footage reveal cars and debris being swept away by strong currents. Emergency services are responding to numerous incidents, including rescuing drivers from submerged vehicles.

Area Affected by Floods

  • Red alerts issued across 27 municipalities in the Málaga region.
  • Guadalhorce and Costa del Sol are among the hardest-hit areas.
  • Emergency services report floodwaters causing significant disruption.

As heavy rains are expected to continue, the meteorological agency warns that up to 120 liters of rain could accumulate in 12 hours. In addition to the red alerts, an orange alert is now in effect for Ronda, Antequera, and Axarquía.

Further Weather Warnings

  • Orange warnings for Granada coast and Almería regions (Valle del Almanzora and Los Vélez).
  • Yellow warnings for Andévalo, Condado de Huelva, and the entire province of Cádiz.

This severe weather event is reminiscent of the deadly floods that occurred last year, which resulted in 220 fatalities. The previous storms also wreaked havoc across various popular holiday hotspots in Spain.

Impact Beyond Spain

Meanwhile, Europe is facing additional extreme weather conditions. Mount Etna in Sicily has entered a new eruptive phase, releasing lava and ash clouds. This eruption adds to the list of urgent weather events currently affecting the continent.

As the situation continues to develop, residents and travelers in the Costa del Sol are advised to remain vigilant and stay indoors if possible. The combination of severe rainfall and high waters poses significant risks.
