Regaleira Aims for Consecutive Victory in Arima Kinen

The Arima Kinen, known as Japan’s “Grand Prix,” is set to conclude the grade 1 turf racing season. This prestigious race will take place on December 28 at Nakayama Racecourse. It features a significant purse of approximately US$7 million, with the winner of the 2,500 meters (around 12.5 furlongs) event earning about US$3.2 million.

Regaleira Aims for Consecutive Victory

This year’s standout nominee is Regaleira, last year’s champion, who garnered over 612,700 votes from fans. The 4-year-old filly is trained by Tetsuya Kimura and represents Sunday Racing. After facing medical issues that sidelined her for nearly a year, she rebounded impressively by winning the Sankei Sho All Comers (G2T) in September and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1T) on November 16 at Kyoto Racecourse.

  • Last Year’s Winner: Regaleira
  • Trainer: Tetsuya Kimura
  • Purse for Winner: Approximately US$3.2 million
  • Total Purse: Nearly US$7 million
  • Distance: 2,500 meters
  • Regaleira’s Voting Count: 612,700 votes

Regaleira’s race strategy will focus on improving her start. Assistant trainer Yu Ota noted that her previous break in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup was less than ideal. The upcoming Arima Kinen presents a different starting position, which should aid her performance.

Strong Contenders in the Field

Regaleira will face competition from several formidable horses. Danon Decile, who finished third in last year’s Arima Kinen, also has a commendable record including a victory at the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1T) this year. Despite consistent performances, trainer Shogo Yasuda admits Danon Decile still has areas to improve, particularly regarding his behavior in races.

  • Danon Decile: 4-year-old son of Epiphaneia, finished third in the previous Arima Kinen.
  • Museum Mile: A 3-year-old colt by Leontes with experience in longer distances.
  • Meisho Tabaru: One of the top 10 nominees.
  • Justin Palace: Another competitor in the 16-horse field.

Christophe Lemaire, currently leading Japan’s jockey rankings, is set to ride Regaleira, having surpassed Keita Tosaki in wins. This significant shift in jockeys may impact the race dynamics as Regaleira seeks a historic second consecutive victory.

The Arima Kinen promises to be an exciting event as Regaleira aims to make history, and fans eagerly await the performances of their favorite horses. With a mix of experienced competitors and fresh talents, this race is a fitting end to Japan’s turf racing season.
