Jeffrey R. Holland, LDS Church Leader-in-Line, Passes Away at 85

Jeffrey R. Holland, a prominent leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), has passed away at the age of 85. His death occurred early Saturday morning due to complications related to kidney disease. The announcement came from the church, confirming that Holland died in Salt Lake City.

Leadership Role and Succession

Holland was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a governing body instrumental in setting church policy. He was the longest-serving member after President Dallin H. Oaks, making him next in line for the church presidency. Oaks, now 93, was appointed president of the faith in October 2023, leading a global membership of over 17 million followers.

Health Challenges and Legacy

Holland faced ongoing health issues, having been hospitalized during the Christmas season. His declining health had been noted as a possible factor when Oaks chose not to appoint him as a counselor. Holland’s passing creates a vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve, which Oaks is expected to fill by selecting a new member from lower-tier leadership.

  • Birthplace: St. George, Utah
  • Tenure at BYU: Served as the ninth president from 1980 to 1989
  • Awards: Received the “Torch of Liberty” award from the Anti-Defamation League

Contributions to Education and Faith

Before his church leadership roles, Holland had a distinguished career in education administration. He was a commissioner for the church’s global education system and worked to enhance interfaith relations, notably establishing a satellite campus for Brigham Young University (BYU) in Jerusalem.

Memorable Speeches and Public Perception

Holland was celebrated for his powerful oratory skills. He addressed significant issues within the church, including mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ topics. In a notable address in 2021, he urged members to uphold the church’s stance against same-sex marriage, a speech that became mandatory reading at BYU in 2024, attracting attention and concern from LGBTQ+ advocates.

Holland is survived by his wife, Patricia Terry Holland, along with their three children, 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. His long legacy in the LDS community and contributions to education and interfaith dialogue will be remembered profoundly by many.
