Tennessee Football Athlete Reenters Transfer Portal for New Opportunities

In a significant development for college football, Cameron Seldon, a former running back at Tennessee and current wide receiver at Virginia Tech, has reentered the transfer portal. This move comes as the player seeks new opportunities for the upcoming season.

Cameron Seldon: Career Overview

Seldon has played three seasons in college football, devoting two years to the University of Tennessee before transferring to Virginia Tech. During his time at Virginia Tech, he transitioned to playing as a wide receiver, finishing the season with notable stats. In 11 games, including three starts, he recorded 23 receptions for 165 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also contributed with seven carries for 28 yards.

Time at Tennessee

During his tenure at Tennessee, Seldon primarily played as a running back but struggled to gain significant playing time. In his second year, he was part of a team that advanced to the College Football Playoffs. In that season, he participated in six games, amassing 118 rushing yards and one touchdown on 23 attempts. His performance as a true freshman included 25 carries for 106 yards.

Recruitment and Recognition

  • Seldon was a highly regarded recruit, earning a four-star rating.
  • He ranked as the No. 77 overall recruit nationally in the 2023 class.
  • Considered the No. 3 athlete nationally, he was recognized as the top player from Virginia.

Recent Changes at Virginia Tech

Seldon’s decision to enter the transfer portal a second time coincides with a change in leadership at Virginia Tech. Following the departure of head coach Brent Pry, James Franklin has taken over the program, although Pry remains as the defensive coordinator. This coaching shakeup may have influenced Seldon’s decision to seek a new environment.

Tennessee’s Transfer Scene

The University of Tennessee has experienced substantial roster turnover, losing eight players to the transfer portal this offseason. Key departures include:

  • Quarterback Jake Merklinger
  • Running back Peyton Lewis
  • Defensive back Marcus Goree Jr.
  • Linebacker Brenden Anes
  • Edge rusher Kellen Lindstrom
  • Defensive tackle Jamal Wallace
  • Defensive back Boo Carter
  • Linemen Trevor Duncan

While Carter has not been part of the team since November, Duncan was absent from the last season after medically retiring from the sport.

Cameron Seldon’s future remains uncertain as he seeks a new home through the transfer portal, potentially reshaping his collegiate football career once again.
