Virginia Tech’s James Franklin Hire Ranked 2nd Best in 2025 Coaching Carousel

A new chapter has begun in Blacksburg with the hiring of former Penn State head coach James Franklin as the head football coach for Virginia Tech. Franklin’s recruitment was announced last month, and he is already taking significant steps to strengthen the program. Notably, he has assembled much of his coaching staff and is preparing for roster adjustments ahead of the transfer portal’s opening.

James Franklin’s Impact at Virginia Tech

James Franklin has garnered acclaim since his hiring, as many analysts believe he brings a wealth of experience and a successful track record. ESPN’s Bill Connelly ranked Franklin’s hiring as the second-best in the 2025 coaching carousel, just behind LSU’s addition of Lane Kiffin. Connelly’s analysis highlights Franklin’s impressive ability to maximize the potential of his teams, showcasing his expertise in turning struggling programs into competitive ones.

Coaching Achievements

Before joining Virginia Tech, Franklin significantly transformed Vanderbilt University’s football program from 2011 to 2013. Under his leadership, Vanderbilt reached bowl games in consecutive seasons, marking a historic milestone for the school:

  • 2012: Achieved a 9-4 record, securing spots in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll for the first time since 1948.
  • Longest winning streak since 1948 and first home victory over Tennessee in three decades.
  • 2013: Continued success with another 9-win season and a victory in the BBVA Compass Bowl, marking back-to-back 9-win campaigns.

Success at Penn State

Franklin’s tenure at Penn State solidified his status as a leading figure in college football. Over nine seasons, he achieved five top-10 finishes and mentored numerous players, including:

  • 18 All-America selections.
  • 32 major award winners or finalists.
  • 59 NFL Draft picks.

By 2024, Franklin recorded his 100th victory at Penn State, joining an elite group of seven active FBS coaches with over 100 wins at their respective schools.

Franklin’s Vision for Virginia Tech

Throughout his hiring announcement, Franklin expressed enthusiasm and commitment to his new role. He stated, “I’m honored and humbled to join the Hokie family. My vision is simple: to restore unmatched excellence, to build something that lasts.” He aims to engage with players, staff, and the entire Virginia Tech community.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), all eyes will be on Franklin as he seeks to position the Hokies for success in a competitive landscape.
