Sports Community Rallies as “Hockey Mom of the Year” Fights Cancer

As the hockey world turns its attention to Minnesota, the 50th IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship kicks off. This prestigious event features some of the best players under the age of 20 competing at the Grand Casino Arena and Mariucci Arena. The championship runs for a week and a half, showcasing young talent from around the globe.
Celebrating Hockey Moms
In conjunction with the championship, a special honor is given to those behind the players: the hockey moms. The “Hockey Mom of the Year” award recognizes the dedication and sacrifices made by these mothers. In November, Jacqueline Nowakowski of Lino Lakes received this esteemed title during a ceremony at Mall of America.
- Finalist: Jacqueline Nowakowski
- Children: 5-year-old Jake, 8-year-old Owen, and 11-year-old Leo
“I’m happy to represent all hockey moms,” Nowakowski stated, emphasizing the unity within this community. Little did she know how much she would lean on this community after her recent health scare.
Facing Cancer
In June, Jacqueline was diagnosed with breast cancer, a revelation that struck just before the last week of school. Following her diagnosis, she underwent 12 weeks of chemotherapy and had a mastectomy in October.
The support from fellow hockey moms was overwhelming. From meal trains to gift cards, assistance poured in. Notably, even coaches from opposing teams offered their help.
Spring Lake Park coach Jess Scott remarked, “You think about the family, their kids, just how their lives are going to change, and whatever you can do to help.”
The Power of Community Support
Beyond the tangible support, the emotional encouragement meant the world to Jacqueline. She cherished the inquiries made to her eldest son, Leo, by his peers about her well-being.
“Just for people to ask that, you know, it meant a lot,” she expressed. The family found solace in the hockey community, which provided a sense of normalcy amid their challenges.
A Positive Outlook
Despite the trials ahead, Jacqueline’s prognosis is positive. She is looking forward to more treatments in the New Year but remains optimistic about her recovery.
She and her family are eager to enjoy the World Junior Hockey Championship, attending as many games as possible. The experience will not only celebrate their love for the sport but also their enduring community spirit.
