A significant winter ice storm is forecasted to affect travel on Friday afternoon, posing risks across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded winter storm watches to ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories. These alerts will be active from Friday morning until Saturday morning.

Storm Warnings and Affected Areas

The ice storm warnings will be in effect from 10 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday for the following counties:

  • Elk
  • Jefferson
  • Clearfield
  • Cambria
  • Somerset

Winter weather advisories will cover:

  • Cameron
  • Centre
  • Blair
  • Bedford
  • Huntingdon

Ice Accumulation and Travel Impacts

Ice accumulation is expected to range from one-tenth to a quarter of an inch across most regions. Some localized areas could receive between three-tenths to half an inch. Due to these conditions, travel is highly discouraged unless absolutely necessary. Roads will be slick, leading to treacherous driving from Friday afternoon into the evening.

Travel Preparedness

For those who must travel, it is essential to prepare adequately:

  • Carry an extra flashlight.
  • Include warm blankets or jackets.
  • Have food and water on hand.

Road Restrictions in Place

PennDOT has implemented preliminary travel restrictions starting on Friday, December 26th. The following Tier 3 restrictions will apply:

  • Speed limits reduced to 45 mph on major roadways.
  • Interstate 81 south of I-83 will have restrictions beginning at 10 AM.
  • All Pennsylvania interstates west of I-81, along with the PA Turnpike (I-76 and I-70), will be restricted.
  • Restrictions will extend to I-81 north of I-83 beginning at 2 PM.
  • Route 33 and U.S. 22 from I-78 to Route 33 are also affected.

Understanding Tier 3 Restrictions

Under Tier 3 restrictions:

  • No commercial vehicles are allowed, except for loaded single trailers with chains or approved traction devices.
  • School buses, commercial buses, motorcycles, and vehicles towing trailers are also prohibited.

Winter Driving Tips

To ensure safety while driving in icy conditions:

  • Reduce speed gradually and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
  • Activate headlights and, if in a snow squall, turn on hazard lights.
  • Keep windows and mirrors clear of snow and ice.
  • Stay alert and patient; avoid distractions.
