The Middle Collegiate Church in New York City’s East Village is preparing for a significant celebration this Christmas. After suffering extensive damage from a six-alarm fire in December 2020, the historic church will hold its first in-person Christmas Eve service since the devastating event.
The Historic Middle Collegiate Church
Founded in 1628 by Dutch Protestants, Middle Collegiate Church is the oldest continuous Protestant congregation in North America. For nearly four centuries, the church has served as a cornerstone for community service and social justice. Throughout its history, it has hosted numerous charity events including food and clothing drives.
Impact of the Fire
In December 2020, flames from a vacant building neighboring the church engulfed the structure, destroying its stained glass windows and wooden pews. Senior Pastor Reverend Doctor Jacqueline Lewis, who has been leading the congregation for 22 years, described the moment as heart-wrenching. “We were weeping and just watching our memories burn,” she recalled.
Rebuilding and Renewal
The church officially reopened on Easter 2023 after a lengthy rebuilding process. The new facility features a smaller sanctuary but comes equipped with updated audio and visual technology to allow for livestream services.
