Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced positive advancements in U.S.-led peace talks aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. During a press conference in Kyiv, he revealed that initial drafts presented by U.S. officials address many of Ukraine’s demands. However, he acknowledged that no side may fully achieve all its objectives in the negotiations.
Zelenskyy’s Optimism on Peace Deal
Zelenskyy described the latest exchanges between Ukraine and the U.S. as “quite solid.” He remarked that while approximately 90% of Ukraine’s demands are reflected in the draft agreements, both nations still face challenges in reaching a consensus. The proposed framework includes key aspects such as:
- A 20-point plan outlining the peace agreement.
- Security guarantees involving Ukraine, European nations, and the United States.
- A bilateral security document detailing U.S. support for Ukraine.
Military and Security Provisions
The Ukrainian army is set to maintain a peacetime strength of 800,000 troops. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of EU membership and the deployment of European forces, led by France and the UK, alongside U.S. assistance, to enhance Ukraine’s security across multiple domains.
President Zelenskyy reiterated that the proposed bilateral security document will need to be reviewed by the U.S. Congress, emphasizing that certain information should remain classified. The U.S. delegation is currently engaging in talks with Russian representatives while keeping the precise details confidential.
Ukraine’s Defense Strategy
In recent military developments, Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian forces have been actively defending against intensifying attacks from Russia. He noted an increase in Russian casualties during this period. Ukrainian troops have struck key military targets within Russia, including:
- An oil terminal and a pipeline in the Krasnodar region.
- Two fighter jets and two naval vessels.
- A drone launch site and an ammunition depot in occupied territories.
These operations are part of Ukraine’s strategic efforts to disrupt the Russian military campaign and counter President Vladimir Putin’s narrative of military strength.
Ongoing Conflict and Energy Challenges
As the conflict persists, Russian forces continue to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure through drone attacks. In the latest incidents, 86 drones were launched, with Ukrainian defense systems successfully intercepting 58 of them. This tactic, described as “weaponizing winter,” aims to leave civilians without essential services like heat and water during the cold months.
