America’s Oldest National Park Ranger, Betty Reid Soskin, Dies at 104

Betty Reid Soskin, the oldest National Park Service ranger in the United States, has passed away at the age of 104. Her family confirmed her death on December 21, noting that she died peacefully at her home in Richmond, California.

Life and Legacy of Betty Reid Soskin

Born on September 22, 1921, Soskin led an extraordinary life filled with achievements in various fields. During World War II, she worked as a file clerk for a boilermaker’s union. Later, she founded Reid’s Records in Berkeley, which remained operational for an impressive 75 years.

Career at the National Park Service

Soskin joined the National Park Service (NPS) as an interpretative ranger at the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond. She dedicated over a decade to educating visitors about history and personal narratives related to the war. In 2022, she retired after an illustrious career with NPS.
