University of Virginia Appoints 10th President

Scott Beardsley has been appointed the 10th president of the University of Virginia (UVA) following a board meeting on Friday. His selection comes amidst opposition from lawmakers, faculty members, and community organizations urging the Board of Visitors to pause the presidential search.

Background on the Appointment

Lawmakers, including Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, had requested that the board delay the selection process until new appointees could be confirmed in January. Beardsley’s term is set to begin on January 1. He succeeds Jim Ryan, who resigned in June after the U.S. Department of Justice pressured the university regarding its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Beardsley’s Vision and Experience

The Board of Visitors expressed confidence in Beardsley’s leadership. They highlighted his extensive experience, particularly as the dean of the UVA Darden School of Business. His tenure at Darden was marked by record academic rankings, enhanced student access, and faculty development.

  • Former career: 26 years at McKinsey & Company
  • Position at McKinsey: Senior partner
  • Focus: Global learning and leadership development

In his statement, Beardsley emphasized his commitment to advancing UVA’s mission while honoring its historic legacy. He aims to adopt a student-centered, results-driven approach to leadership, adapting to the evolving landscape of higher education.

Recognizing Former Leadership

The board also acknowledged Jim Ryan’s seven years of service. Ryan’s resignation followed investigations by the Department of Justice, which raised concerns over the university’s policies. Interim president Paul Mahoney, along with a diverse search committee, was commended for their roles during this transitional period.

The Board of Visitors concluded that Beardsley’s election as the 10th president reflects the community’s input and commitment to the university’s future. They expressed a collective desire to move forward with unity and purpose.
