Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar Apologizes for Burkina Faso Military Flight

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, recently issued an apology to Burkina Faso regarding a significant diplomatic incident. This involved an unauthorized entry of a Nigerian military jet into Burkinabè airspace.

Nigerian Military Jet Incident

The incident led to the detention of 11 Nigerian servicemen. According to Tuggar’s spokesperson, these personnel have since been released and are en route back to Nigeria, although specific details about their return timeline have not been disclosed.

Details of the Flight

The Nigerian military aircraft was en route to Portugal when it encountered a technical issue, necessitating an emergency landing in Burkina Faso. This unexpected stop ignited tensions between Nigeria and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Diplomatic Repercussions

The AES swiftly condemned the incident, labeling it an “unfriendly act.” Consequently, the coalition’s member states heightened their air force readiness to “neutralise any aircraft” encroaching upon their airspace. Notably, all three AES nations are governed by military administrations and have distanced themselves from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), seeking closer ties with Russia.

Tuggar’s Diplomatic Efforts

On Wednesday, Tuggar led a delegation to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. There, he met with military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré to address the situation directly. During a national television address, Tuggar acknowledged the “irregularities concerning the overflight authorisations” and expressed regret over the incident.

Future Cooperation

The dialogue between Nigeria and Burkina Faso yielded an agreement to enhance bilateral cooperation and regional integration. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to regular consultations to mitigate any future diplomatic issues.

As this situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on the safe return of the military personnel and the aircraft to Nigeria. Their reported “high spirits” offer a positive note in the aftermath of this tense encounter.
