Colombia Extradites Members of Dangerous Human Smuggling Organization

Two Colombian nationals have been extradited to the United States to stand trial for their involvement in a dangerous human smuggling organization. The extradition comes after an indictment was issued by a federal grand jury in the Western District of Texas in October 2024.
Colombian Nationals Extradited for Human Smuggling
The defendants, Hernando Manuel De La Cruz Rivera Orjuela, 53, also known as “El Patron,” and Luis Enrique Linero Pinto, 41, also known as “El Calvo,” faced charges related to a conspiracy that endangered numerous lives. Their operation allegedly resulted in the disappearance of 42 individuals, including two boat captains, at sea.
Details of the Charges
According to the indictment, Rivera Orjuela and Linero Pinto played significant roles in unlawfully smuggling migrants from Colombia. They facilitated the transport of individuals from various locations to San Andres Island, Colombia, from where they aimed to reach the United States via Nicaragua.
- Rivera Orjuela and Linero Pinto assisted migrants in reaching San Andres Island.
- They arranged lodging and transportation to boats heading for Nicaragua.
- Linero Pinto allegedly bribed members of the Colombian Navy to avoid detection.
Incident Summary
An incident on October 21, 2023, highlighted the dangers associated with this smuggling operation. A boat carrying approximately 40 migrants and two captains vanished while en route to Nicaragua, further emphasizing the operation’s dire consequences.
Law Enforcement Collaboration
The extradition follows a successful collaboration between U.S. and Colombian law enforcement entities. Their combined efforts led to the arrests of the suspects in December 2024, at the request of U.S. authorities.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Justin R. Simmons, emphasized the commitment to dismantling human smuggling operations. He stated that these efforts are vital in combating transnational criminal networks that exploit vulnerable populations for profit.
Joint Task Force Alpha’s Role
The investigation and indictment were coordinated by Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), which targets high-impact human smuggling and trafficking efforts. This task force collaborates with various legal and law enforcement agencies, both domestically and internationally, to address these critical issues.
Impact of the Task Force
JTFA has achieved significant results, including:
- Over 425 arrests of key figures in human smuggling and trafficking.
- More than 375 convictions in the U.S.
- Imposition of over 325 significant jail sentences.
- Substantial asset forfeitures from human smuggling operations.
The extradition of Rivera Orjuela and Linero Pinto marks a milestone, being the first from Colombia following JTFA’s expansion to target these criminal organizations. Prosecutors from the Justice Department and U.S. Attorney’s Office are now moving forward with the case.
This case illustrates the ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration and human smuggling. An indictment is merely an accusation, and all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
