Reports: LSU Football Hires South Carolina Assistant Lane Kiffin

South Carolina football is poised for a significant change as Sterling Lucas, a key assistant coach, is expected to leave for LSU. Reports indicate that the outside linebackers coach is set to join the coaching staff at Louisiana State University, marking a major shift for the Gamecocks.

Sterling Lucas’s Impact at South Carolina

Lucas has played a vital role in building South Carolina’s defensive capabilities. His coaching has been critical in the development of players like Kyle Kennard and five-star recruit Dylan Stewart.

  • Kennard, a transfer from Georgia Tech, recorded 11.5 sacks in his single season with the Gamecocks.
  • Dylan Stewart has amassed 11 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss over two seasons.

Coaching Career and Development Skills

Before arriving at South Carolina, Lucas honed his skills in the NFL. He spent five years (2016-2020) with the Baltimore Ravens and one year (2021) with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the assistant defensive line coach.

In January 2022, Lucas was appointed by head coach Shane Beamer, quickly establishing himself as an effective talent developer.

Recruiting Success

In addition to his coaching, Lucas has demonstrated significant recruiting prowess. He played a critical role in securing commitments from high-profile recruits such as:

  • Nyck Harbor, a five-star wide receiver.
  • Dylan Stewart, a standout defensive recruit.

With Stewart projected to be a top NFL draft pick in 2027, Lucas’s departure raises questions about the recruiting landscape at South Carolina and the future of these elite players.

Contractual Obligations

Lucas, whose salary was set to be $775,000 for the upcoming year, faces a $426,250 buyout if he leaves South Carolina before the new year. This aspect of his contract adds a layer of complexity to his potential move to LSU.

As the future unfolds, the Gamecocks may feel the impact of losing one of their most influential assistant coaches.
