Storm Watch: Heavy Rains and Flooding Hit Bronx Areas

Residents in the Bronx are currently facing severe weather conditions, including heavy rains and flooding. A wind advisory is in effect, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph and isolated instances approaching 60 mph in thunderstorms.

Severe Weather Alerts

The National Weather Service has issued several advisories:

  • Wind Advisory: In effect until 12 a.m. with gusty winds expected.
  • Coastal Flood Advisory: Active in Brooklyn until 11 a.m., with minor flooding anticipated near waterfront areas.

Impact on Travel and Safety

Heavy rainfall coinciding with high tide is leading to localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions. This morning’s commute may be particularly treacherous due to:

  • Widespread rain accumulation of 0.75 to 1 inch.
  • Rapidly falling temperatures, from the mid to upper 50s to low 40s by evening.
  • Potential road obstructions from downed trees and power outages caused by wind gusts.

Forecast for the Coming Days

The storm is expected to dissipate around 1 p.m. today. However, temperatures will drop significantly, creating a risk for any standing water to freeze overnight. The low temperatures are projected to be in the upper 20s by Saturday morning. Key upcoming weather highlights include:

  • Saturday: Highs near 39°F with partly sunny skies and breezy conditions.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny but chilly. Highs reaching around 47°F.
  • Next Week: Possible wintry mix on Tuesday with a weak frontal system moving through.

Looking Ahead

As the Christmas holiday approaches, the likelihood of a white Christmas, defined as having at least one inch of snow on the ground by Christmas morning, remains low. Last year saw the last occurrence of a white Christmas, while expectations for this year suggest minimal snowfall.
