Romanian Court Sentences Rapper Wiz Khalifa to 9 Months for Drug Possession

American rapper Wiz Khalifa has received a nine-month prison sentence in Romania due to drug possession. This verdict was delivered by a Romanian court on Thursday, more than a year after he performed at a music festival in the country.

Incident Details

Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, faced legal issues following his appearance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti. During the festival in July 2024, he was reportedly seen smoking cannabis on stage.

Romanian police intervened during the performance, leading to Khalifa’s arrest. Authorities discovered that he was in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis and that he had consumed some of it while performing.

Judicial Proceedings

The Constanta Court of Appeal issued the sentencing, confirming Khalifa’s conviction for “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.” This ruling is definitive.

Earlier, in April, a lower court had fined Khalifa 3,600 lei (approximately $1,140 CAD) for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs.” However, prosecutors contested this punishment, seeking a more severe penalty.

Romania’s Drug Laws

  • Romania has stringent laws concerning drug use.
  • Possession of cannabis for personal use is a criminal offense.
  • Punishments can include imprisonment for three months to two years or hefty fines.

Future Implications

It remains uncertain whether Romanian authorities will pursue an extradition request since Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and does not reside in Romania.

Wiz Khalifa, 38, gained widespread fame with his mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice.” His performance at the festival included a rendition of his popular song “Young, Wild & Free,” during which he smoked a large, hand-rolled cigarette.
