D.C. United has made a significant move by selecting Nikola Markovic with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. The center back, a standout from North Carolina State University, has been a key player in his college team’s success.

Markovic was instrumental in leading NC State to its first appearance in the NCAA national championship game in 2025. During the 2025 season, he started all 22 games, contributing to a remarkable team performance.

  • Achieved 15 shutouts, the best in NCAA

His outstanding performance earned him recognition as a 2025 First Team All-American. Before competing at NC State, Markovic was part of CF Montréal’s academy, shaping his early career.

Markovic joins a D.C. United team that is currently undergoing a rebuild. The club finished at the bottom of the table in the 2025 season, allowing the second-most goals in the league, totaling 66.
