Vijay Denounces DMK as Adversary in Erode Speech

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has fiercely criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), labeling it an “evil force.” This statement was made during a meeting with party workers in Erode district on December 18. It marked Vijay’s first public gathering in Tamil Nadu following the tragic Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives in September.

Key Issues Highlighted by Vijay

During the address, Vijay scrutinized the DMK for failing to deliver on several key promises. He emphasized the following issues:

  • Gas cylinder prices promised at ₹100
  • Abolition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)
  • Waiver of educational loans

Vijay stated that the government’s actions contradict its promises. He specifically criticized the non-implementation of the Athikadavu–Avinashi water diversion scheme, which is designed to support agriculture by channeling excess water from the Bhavani river to Erode, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore districts.

Critique of Welfare Measures

Vijay responded to criticisms of his previous speeches in Kanchipuram, where he proposed welfare initiatives. He argued that his ideas were misrepresented. “I oppose branding welfare measures as ‘freebies,'” he insisted. Vijay highlighted various areas needing improvement, such as:

  • Permanent housing for all
  • Increased education opportunities with a focus on reducing dropout rates
  • Creation of stable employment opportunities
  • Ensuring women’s safety

He challenged the claims of the DMK regarding their achievements, questioning why many families still live in rented accommodations and why school dropouts have surged under their governance.

Security Measures for Erode Meeting

Given the recent tragedy in Karur, extensive security measures were put in place for the Erode meeting. Approximately 1,500 police officers were deployed, along with 60 CCTV cameras to enhance safety. Additional resources included:

  • 40 walkie-talkies for crowd coordination
  • 24 ambulances
  • A medical team consisting of 72 doctors and 120 nurses
  • Four fire engines from nearby towns

To further ensure public safety, the Erode District Collector, S Kandasamy, ordered a temporary suspension of liquor sales from 12 pm to 4 pm around the meeting venue.

Political Landscape and Legacy

During his remarks, Vijay reflected on the political legacy of former Chief Ministers MG Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, both of whom, like him, transitioned from acting to politics. He expressed a newfound understanding of their fierce opposition to the DMK, branding the party an “evil force” opposed to TVK’s mission for good.

Vijay also dismissed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) as irrelevant in the current electoral context. This meeting represented a significant moment for TVK as it took place shortly after former AIADMK leader KA Sengottaiyan became Chief Coordinator of the party’s High-Level Administrative Committee. Notably, Erode is Sengottaiyan’s home district and a vital area within the politically influential Kongu belt.

These developments signify TVK’s strategic response to the DMK’s efforts to strengthen its foothold in western Tamil Nadu, particularly through Minister Senthil Balaji’s initiatives.
