Nationwide Recall of Electric Blankets Over Fire and Shock Risk

An urgent recall has been issued for a popular electric blanket in the UK due to significant fire and electric shock risks. This recall affects the B&Q GoodHome Saturnia Electric Blanket, which has been sold since November 2024.

Recall Details

The Office for Product Safety and Standards reported that the electric component of the blanket can overheat, creating a fire hazard. In addition, the overheat can potentially damage the controller, leading to exposed live parts and the risk of electric shocks.

  • Product: B&Q GoodHome Saturnia Electric Blanket
  • Manufacturer: Made in China
  • Date of Recall: November 2024

Customers are advised to stop using the electric blanket immediately. They should disconnect it from the mains and return it to a B&Q store for a full refund. This product was found to violate the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.

Safety Precautions for Users

As electric blankets gain popularity this winter, particularly as individuals seek cost-effective ways to stay warm amid rising energy bills, fire brigades have begun issuing warnings. The London Fire Brigade emphasizes the importance of safety when using these devices.

To ensure safe use of electric blankets, the fire service recommends:

  • Checking for any fraying or wear in the fabric.
  • Inspecting electrical parts for any signs of damage.
  • Avoiding the use of hot water bottles with electric blankets.
  • Only using the blanket overnight if it is specified as safe for that purpose.

Support for Vulnerable Communities

With the aim of helping those most in need, several energy providers and councils are offering free electric blankets, hand warmers, and portable heaters to vulnerable populations this winter. Notably, companies such as Octopus Energy and OVO are involved in these initiatives.

Using an electric blanket can result in significant savings on energy bills, with estimates suggesting a reduction of up to £300 annually. These blankets can be particularly beneficial for older adults or those with limited mobility.
