Vandal Targets Anti-ICE Nativity Scene at Lake Street Church, Adds Zip Ties, Gas Masks

A Nativity scene at Lake Street Church in Evanston, Illinois, has drawn attention for its provocative depiction of the holy family in the context of contemporary immigration issues. The display features a lone baby Jesus, along with Mary and Joseph, who are depicted wearing gas masks. Figures of Roman centurions, designed to resemble Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, loom ominously nearby.

Vandalism and Community Response

Recently, the Nativity scene was vandalized, resulting in the decapitation of the statue of Mary. Vandals also attempted to dismantle the display, removing zip ties from baby Jesus’ hands, symbolizing the distressing imagery associated with recent immigration raids. The church responded by adding a sign that states Mary was “beaten and dragged away” in front of her child.

Jill Westerfield, Associate Minister at Lake Street Church, expressed their intent to provoke thought and conversation about immigration enforcement. She stated, “We knew that people might find the images upsetting. It is upsetting because it’s happening.”

Activism Roots and Future Plans

The church has a strong history of advocacy, particularly concerning federal immigration policies. Plans for this radical Nativity scene began in October, inspired by local community experiences. “Even before ICE came to Evanston, I was witnessing these events in my own neighborhood,” Westerfield noted.

Community Support and Feedback

  • Many passersby have expressed support for the Nativity scene.
  • Westerfield noted positive feedback includes encouragement from community members.
  • Only a few individuals have shown a desire to vandalize the artwork.

The display will remain unchanged until Christmas Eve, when Westerfield hopes to introduce modifications that will foster delight among community members. Despite the unrest and vandalism, the church maintains that the Nativity scene carries a significant message about current societal issues.
