Jarmo Kekäläinen Appointed GM as Kevyn Adams Steps Down

In a significant shake-up for the Buffalo Sabres, owner Terry Pegula has announced the appointment of Jarmo Kekäläinen as the new general manager, following the dismissal of Kevyn Adams. This transition reflects the organization’s commitment to enhancing its hockey operations.

On the decision to relieve Adams of his duties, Pegula expressed gratitude for Adams’ service. He noted, “We are not where we need to be as an organization.” Moving forward, Pegula emphasized the need for new leadership to foster a competitive team year after year.
Ascendancy of Jarmo Kekäläinen
Jarmo Kekäläinen’s appointment is effective immediately. Previously, he served as a senior advisor, a position he assumed on May 30, 2025. Kekäläinen will manage all facets of the Sabres’ hockey operations, marking a new era for the team.
Kekäläinen has an extensive background in NHL management, making this his first season as general manager, totaling 28 years within league front offices. He expressed gratitude to the Pegulas for the opportunity and excitement to engage with Sabres fans.
Kekäläinen’s Track Record
- Previous Experience: He was the general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013 to 2024.
- Milestones: Under his leadership, the Blue Jackets made five playoff appearances, recorded a franchise-high 50 wins, and achieved 108 points in the 2016-17 season.
- Historic Achievement: Kekäläinen became the first European-born GM in NHL history.
- Franchise Success: Initiated a playoff series victory, defeating Tampa Bay in 2019.
- Previous Roles: Held various executive positions with the St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators.

Jarmo Kekäläinen also has a rich history in Finnish hockey, having managed Jokerit and contributed to the Finnish national team program. His playing days were spent at Clarkson University and in professional leagues in Finland and Sweden.
