HRCE Closes Schools and Delays Openings Following Sunday Storm

Residents of Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) are navigating challenging conditions following a recent winter storm. Although Environment Canada has lifted the winter storm warnings for the region, many highways remain treacherous due to snow and ice.

Impact of the Sunday Storm on Schools

City crews worked overnight to clear roads and sidewalks, focusing on making travel safer for residents. Meteorologist Alistair Aalders indicated that while the storm has moved east, flurries may still occur this morning in HRM. Travelers should be cautious, particularly in northern and eastern areas where snow persists.

School Closures and Delays

Due to the winter storm’s impact, several schools within the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) faced closures and delays:

  • Schools closed for the day:
    • Bay View High
    • Eastern Shore District High
    • Marine Drive High School
    • Musquodoboit Rural High School
  • Other schools in HRCE experienced a two-hour delayed opening. All classes are canceled in:
    • West Hants area
    • Horton and NKEC
    • Central Kings within Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education
  • The Chignecto-Central, Strait, and Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centres for Education canceled all classes for Monday.

The ongoing weather conditions, including snow squalls and poor visibility in certain areas, continue to pose challenges for both students and travelers throughout the region.
