In a recent interview with Sky News, he emphasized the importance of collaboration as humanity ventures back to the Moon. Peake marked the 10th anniversary of his launch to the International Space Station (ISS) by discussing the need for contingency plans to ensure astronaut safety during missions.
Collaboration Over Competition in Lunar Missions
Tim Peake believes it would be unwise to begin a new era of Moon exploration without proper safety protocols. He stressed that common docking systems are essential for assisting astronauts from different nations in emergencies. “Space is incredibly hard, a very hostile environment,” he remarked, highlighting the challenges of space travel.
NASA’s Stance on Moon Exploration
Sean Duffy, the acting NASA chief, has reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to establishing a lasting presence on the Moon. In a September video, he stated, “We’re going back to the Moon – and this time when we plant our flag, we stay.” Duffy emphasized that maintaining American leadership in space is a top priority.

NASA is set to launch a mission involving four astronauts around the Moon soon, marking the first crewed flight since Apollo in 1972. This mission will utilize NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which has faced challenges in its test flight but is now considered ready for manned missions. Peake acknowledged the associated risks but showed confidence in the astronauts and mission experts.
European Representation in Lunar Exploration
The European Space Agency (ESA) recently announced that a yet-to-be-named German astronaut will participate in a future Artemis mission. Peake, who recently retired from the ESA, expressed optimism that the UK would eventually be represented as well. He highlighted the potential of Rosemary Coogan, a trained astronaut from Northern Ireland, to be among the first Europeans on the Moon.
“It would be great to see that first European on the Moon,” Peake said, adding, “I’d love to see a Union flag on the surface in the not-too-distant future.”
