Westroads Mall Transforms into Wonderland for Visually Impaired Kids’ Shopping Spree

The Nebraska Foundation for Visually Impaired Children (NFVIC) recently held its 65th annual Ruth Sokolf Christmas Shopping Party at Westroads Mall in Omaha. This special event allowed visually impaired children to enjoy a unique shopping experience, giving them a chance to shop for Christmas gifts independently.

Annual Holiday Event for Visually Impaired Children

This year’s event welcomed 100 children, each receiving a $100 gift card to purchase presents for themselves and their loved ones. Among the participants was six-year-old Charlette Cullenward, who has faced challenges due to her diagnosis of neurofibromatosis, which affects her eyesight. She joyfully expressed her excitement about the shopping experience.

Empowering Children Through Independence

The shopping party was designed to provide children with the freedom to choose their gifts without parental assistance. Each young participant was paired with a shopping buddy, often composed of high school volunteers. This arrangement not only supports the children but also fosters community involvement.

  • 100 children participated in the event.
  • Each child received a $100 gift card.
  • Charlette, a participant, has neurofibromatosis, impacting her vision.

Volunteer Support Enhances the Experience

Volunteers like Oliver Shaw played a vital role in guiding the children through stores. Shaw assisted Charlette on her shopping journey, helping her find exciting items at popular stores like Toys R Us and 5 Below. The event not only provides joy but also helps instill a sense of independence in the young shoppers.

Beyond Omaha: A Statewide Initiative

While the main event took place in Omaha, NFVIC also reaches out to children across Nebraska who could not attend. Gift cards are distributed statewide, ensuring that more children have the opportunity to experience holiday shopping. Additionally, a similar event was held in Scottsbluff, further extending this incredible holiday experience to kids in western Nebraska.

The Ruth Sokolf Christmas Shopping Party continues to create lasting memories for visually impaired children, blending joy with independence during the festive season.
