How to Purchase the SUV Karen Read Drove the Night John O’Keefe Died
The Lexus LX 570, central to the controversial Karen Read case, is set to be auctioned in the upcoming months. This SUV gained notoriety during the murder trial of Read, who faced serious accusations related to the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe. According to auction house JJManning Auctioneers, the sale could see the vehicle fetch a price above its typical market value due to its infamous history.
Details of the Auction
The vehicle is owned by JB Auto Care in Weymouth, which purchased it after authorities released it following the investigation. It has not been on the road since police seized it nearly four years ago. The Lexus, despite only having 12,000 miles at the time of its purchase, required substantial repairs.
Repairs and Condition
- Oil change completed
- Rodent infestation cleaned
- Navigation system repaired
- Taillight replaced
Christian Brusard, a service advisor at the repair shop, noted that the taillight was at the center of a significant dispute during the trial, as it was claimed to have been damaged in the incident involving O’Keefe. According to Brusard, the vehicle is now in excellent condition.
Timeline of the Case
Karen Read was charged in February 2022 with several serious offenses, including second-degree murder and motor vehicle manslaughter. Her first trial took place in 2024 but resulted in a hung jury, leading to a mistrial. The second trial concluded in June 2025, where she was acquitted of the more severe charges and found guilty of operating under the influence, resulting in a one-year probation sentence.
Proceeds from the Auction
Justin Manning, president of JJManning Auctioneers based in Yarmouth Port, announced that the auction is expected to occur in late January. Notably, JB Auto Care plans to donate all proceeds from the sale to Karen Read, as stated by Brusard.
The auction of the SUV will not only attract attention due to its connection to the high-profile case but also to its fully restored condition, making it a unique item for collectors and those intrigued by its history.
