LCHS’ Edwards Chooses Prairie View A&M University

Aubrey Edwards, a standout pitcher from Lamar Consolidated High School, has committed to continue her softball career at Prairie View A&M University. Prior to her decision, several universities showed interest, but a visit to Prairie View sealed her choice.

Edwards expressed her excitement about joining the Panthers. She stated, “It felt like home. The coach is great, and I felt welcomed by each player.” Prairie View A&M’s head coach, Vernon Bland, has an impressive record, having won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title three times. Edwards looks forward to learning from him.

Career Highlights at Lamar Consolidated

As part of the Lady Mustangs, Edwards played a crucial role in the team’s success. Last season, they achieved their first district championship, a historic milestone for the school. Edwards said, “That was an amazing experience for all of us because we worked as a team.” The team won District 22-5A with an 11-1 record and finished the season 21-5 after being eliminated by Pflugerville Weiss in the area round.

Edwards and her teammates were motivated by the challenge of achieving this historical win. “We knew that we could do this,” she remarked. “To be the district champs for the first time was amazing.”

Prairie View A&M Softball Program

Prairie View A&M competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, currently led by Coach Vernon Bland. Under his leadership, the Panthers secured a remarkable 23-1 conference record in 2024, breaking the SWAC record for most softball wins. The previous year, they held a record of 22-2.

Future Aspirations

Edwards started playing softball at the age of four, initially as a first baseman before transitioning to pitching at age nine. She is currently involved in select ball with Allusions Gold Clevenger, which she says has enhanced her skills and motivation. Looking ahead, she aims to pursue a veterinary degree, inspired by her love for animals. She stated, “I want to continue loving them and caring for them medically.”
