Coventry Road Installs Speed Cameras to Combat Reckless Driving

Coventry officials are considering the installation of speed cameras on key routes to address reckless driving. This initiative aims to improve safety along Broad Lane and surrounding areas. Discussions are ongoing, pending funding and support from West Midlands Police.

Recent Developments on Broad Lane

Recently resurfaced, Broad Lane in Eastern Green has seen new road markings applied. However, the city’s cabinet member for highways, Cllr Patricia Hetherton, acknowledged that these changes could inadvertently increase traffic speed. During her meeting with city officers, Hetherton noted Broad Lane and Upper Eastern Green Road as two of the city’s best roads, but this comes with concerns about vehicles exceeding safe speeds.

Concerns Raised by Local Residents

The urgency for speed cameras was underscored by local residents. A petition with six signatures highlighted the need for action on multiple roads in the vicinity, including Upper and Lower Eastern Green Road, Sutton Avenue, and Farcroft Avenue. The petition indicated that residential construction in the area is likely to compound existing traffic issues. Recently, two car collisions were reported on Broad Lane, emphasizing the need for intervention.

Traffic Safety Measures Under Consideration

In response to these concerns, the council’s head of network management, David Keaney, stated that Broad Lane remains a focal point of concern. He indicated that the area will be part of a broader evaluation for potential Average Speed Enforcement (ASE) corridors. This review is scheduled to take place over the coming months.

Focus on Park Hill Primary School

Safety outside Park Hill Primary School has also been a priority. Keaney noted ongoing efforts to address traffic issues in that area, particularly due to high pedestrian traffic. Although preliminary assessments showed that traffic calming measures did not meet certain criteria, the area will still receive attention.

Proposed Enhancements for Pedestrian Safety

Community engagement is planned for proposed enhancements aimed at improving pedestrian access across roads near the school. Key proposals include:

  • Narrowing Lower Eastern Green Lane to accommodate a new pedestrian crossing
  • Adjusting existing road markings, including single and double yellow lines
  • Introducing new mini-roundabouts at critical junctions, specifically Alderminster Road with Sutherland Avenue and Alspath Lane with Unicorn Avenue
  • Extending the existing 20 mph speed zone to encompass Alspath Lane at its junction with Unicorn Avenue and Upper Eastern Green Lane

Coventry’s officials aim to enhance traffic safety while keeping the community informed and involved as these developments unfold.
