Medical Examiner Publishes Autopsy Report on Epic Universe Roller Coaster Fatality

Recent findings from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report shed light on the tragic death of Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who died after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Epic Universe on September 17. The report reveals that Zavala suffered extensive injuries, including serious neck trauma and a broken leg.
Autopsy Report Findings
The autopsy concluded that Zavala’s death resulted from multiple blunt impact injuries. The report detailed the following key injuries:
- Severe lacerations on the skin
- Fractures of the left orbital bone and nasal cartilage
- C5-C6 intervertebral disk laceration
- Fractured right femur
Incident Overview
On the day of the accident, Dr. Anna Marshall, a bystander, provided immediate medical assistance. She discovered Zavala slumped over the safety restraint on the roller coaster, with a severely broken right leg.
Dr. David Sugar, an orthopedic specialist, reviewed the autopsy findings. He noted that the nature of Zavala’s femur fracture suggested a significant force was applied to it, likely due to rapid bodily movement during the ride.
Circumstances Surrounding the Accident
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the incident. Their findings indicated that a green safety light confirmed Zavala was secured in his seat before the ride commenced. This information has led roller coaster installer Daniel Leavelle to assert that the ride was functioning correctly at the time.
Responses from Authorities
Universal Orlando has not publicly commented on the incident. Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services indicated that Universal cooperated fully during the investigation, emphasizing their commitment to transparency following this tragic event.
The investigation continues, and related authorities are taking appropriate measures in accordance with legal protocols.
