Chicago Faces Wind Chill Alert: Dangerous Chill and Snow Expected This Weekend

Chicago is bracing for an intense cold spell this weekend, accompanied by snow. The National Weather Service has placed several counties under a Cold Weather Advisory from 8 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday. A separate Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for LaSalle and Livingston counties from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. that same day.

Cold Weather Advisory Details

  • Counties affected by the Cold Weather Advisory include Boone, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Will, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake (IL), Livingston, McHenry, Winnebago, Jasper, Lake (IN), and Newton.
  • Waukesha County in Wisconsin is also under an advisory from midnight Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Winter Weather Forecast

Meteorologists suggest increasing cloud cover on Friday afternoon will precede snow arrival. Initial snowfall is anticipated in the early evening hours, with most accumulations likely occurring south of Interstate 80.

On Saturday, temperatures will plummet into the lower teens, with wind chills ranging from -10 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow accumulation projections indicate possible dusting in downtown areas, while regions south of I-80 could see a few inches.

Warming Centers to Assist Residents

As temperatures are expected to drop precipitously, the city of Aurora will have warming centers available from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This initiative aims to provide shelter, meals, and rest for those in need. Aurora Mayor John Laesch emphasized the importance of these centers to prevent hypothermia and related risks.

Volunteer Matt Fogarty noted the centers’ full capacity, especially during severe cold spells, highlighting their necessity for community safety and well-being.

Upcoming Bears Game

This weekend will also witness the Chicago Bears playing at Soldier Field. Sunday morning promises to be the coldest, with wind chills ranging from -5 to -10 degrees. Although winds may ease by Sunday afternoon, the persistent cold remains a concern.

Outlook for Next Week

On a positive note, forecasters anticipate a warming trend, with temperatures potentially reaching the 40s by Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant during this time of harsh winter conditions.
